  • President-elect Joe Biden’s cabinet and senior advisor nominees were featured in the January 18 issue of The New York Times. They included: Xavier Becerra, secretary of health and human services; Miguel Cardona, secretary of education; Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of homeland security, and Isabel Guzman, administrator of the Small Business Administration.
  • Security forces January 17 kept some 7,000 migrants from crossing into Guatemala from Honduras. The Central American migrants were attempting to make their way to the United States, where Biden is expected to overhaul immigration laws that would include plans to help people fleeing violence. – The New York Times, January 18, 2021
  • U.S. Rep. Lou Correa of California announced January 16 that he contracted COVID-19, but pledged to continue working for his Central Orange County constituents while in quarantine. “Earlier this week, Correa was accosted at Dulles International Airport by supporters of President Donald Trump.” – United Press International, January 16, 2021
  • “Adolfo ‘Shabba-Doo’ Quiñones, who grew up dancing in a bleak public housing project in Chicago and went on to become a pioneer of street dance in the 1980s” died. He was 65. – The New York Times, January 17, 2021 … “Armando Manzanero, one of Mexico’s greatest romantic composers, whose ballads were performed by the likes of Elvis Presley and Christina Aguilera died” January 4.   • Jane Addams Hull-House Museum in Chicago will kick off a year-long audio series this month with artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña, “one of the living masters of political theater.” – The Associated Press, January 17, 2021
  • The State Department designated Cuba a state sponsor of terrorism in “a last-minute foreign policy stroke that will complicate the incoming Biden administration’s plans to restore friendlier relations with Havana.” – The New York Times, January 12, 2021
